A root canal is the best way to restore your smile if you have an infected tooth. Usually, a tooth infection happens when a serious cavity or a dental injury destroys the hard, outer layers of your tooth’s structure.

This exposes the vulnerable, nerve and blood vessel-filled “pulp” that keeps your tooth alive. When this pulp becomes infected, your tooth will begin to die. A root canal is used to prevent this, and restore your smile.

In the root canal procedure, Dr. Gurung will create an opening in your tooth, remove the infected and decayed material from within the tooth, then sanitize and fill the tooth with an inert material that replaces the missing pulp. Then, the tooth is restored and protected with a dental filling or crown. This eliminates the infection, and prevents further damage to your tooth.

The most common indicator of a tooth infection is a serious toothache that lasts 1-2 days or more. You may also notice that your tooth is more sensitive to heat and cold, and to the pressure of chewing. It may also feel sore and tender when you eat sugary foods, or the gum tissue near the affected tooth may be inflamed and swollen.

If you notice any of these symptoms, make sure you come into our office right away. In addition, you should definitely seek emergency treatment if you develop a fever, or swelling in your face or mouth due to a tooth infection.

Root canal therapy does not hurt. Throughout the procedure, you won’t feel any pain or discomfort whatsoever, since your mouth will be completely numb. For a few days after your treatment, your tooth may feel a little bit tender or sore, but this should go away quickly.

If your tooth hurts a lot or continues to cause you pain for more than a week after your treatment, this is not normal. Contact Dr. Gurung for a follow-up appointment right away.
